Sunburn aftercare skincare routine with SPF and barrier repair for UK summer

Sunburn Aftercare in the UK: How to Calm, Hydrate and Repair Your Skin Barrier

In the UK, sunburn does not only happen on holiday. A bright lunch break, a walk by the river, a long drive, gardening, queuing outdoors or sitting in a sunny park can be enough to leave the skin feeling hot, red, tight, sore or flaky.

Sunburn is not simply “dry skin”. It is an inflammatory reaction after too much ultraviolet exposure. That is why good after-sun care should be calm and structured: cool the skin first, then hydrate, then support the barrier, and only later think about pigmentation or brightening.

This guide is written for UK customers and uses products currently available from Green Orange Skincare. It is suitable for mild sunburn and heat-related sensitivity. If you have large blisters, severe pain, fever, nausea, dizziness, swelling around the eyes, signs of infection, or sunburn over a large area, please speak to a pharmacist, GP, NHS 111 or urgent care. Do not pop blisters.

Step 1: The first 24 hours — cool and simplify

When the skin feels hot or stinging, the goal is to reduce further irritation. This is not the right moment for exfoliating acids, retinoids, strong vitamin C, scrubs, cleansing masks or high-strength brightening treatments.

  • Move out of direct sun and keep the area covered with loose, breathable clothing.
  • Use a cool shower or a cool damp towel for 10-15 minutes. Avoid ice directly on the skin.
  • Cleanse very gently, or skip cleanser if the skin is sore and you have not worn heavy sunscreen or make-up.
  • Do not rub with a towel. Pat dry with a soft cloth or disposable cotton face towel.
  • Avoid alcohol-heavy products, strong fragrance and anything that stings on application.

For very tender skin, less is better. Apply one soothing layer, wait, and see how your skin reacts before adding anything else.

Step 2: Hydrate and calm redness

Sunburned skin loses water more easily, so hydration matters. Look for humectants such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid and panthenol, plus calming ingredients such as madecassoside, centella, allantoin or botanical soothing extracts.

SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel is a good option when the skin looks flushed or feels uncomfortable. Its formula is built around hyaluronic acid for hydration, with botanical extracts such as cucumber, olive, thyme and mulberry. It is designed for sensitive, redness-prone or blemish-prone skin, so it fits well into a light after-sun routine.

If you prefer a mask, choose a hydrating and repairing sheet mask rather than a clay or deep-cleansing mask. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast B5 Repairing Mask is a practical after-sun choice because it focuses on panthenol (vitamin B5), madecassoside, glycerin and sodium hyaluronate. These ingredients help with comfort, hydration and barrier support.

For skin that mainly feels tight and dehydrated, Kefumei Small Hydrating Repair Mask or Kefumei Deep Hydrating Repair Mask can be used as a short hydration boost. Keep the masking time sensible, around 10-15 minutes, then follow with a moisturiser to seal in water.

Step 3: Repair the skin barrier

Once the heat and stinging have settled, usually after the first day or two, the priority becomes barrier repair. This is where moisturisers and lipid-supporting formulas are useful.

SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 is particularly relevant when the skin feels dry, tight or flaky after sun exposure. The formula is known for its lipid ratio approach, using ceramides, cholesterol and fatty-acid-related lipids. These are the types of ingredients that help support the “mortar” between skin cells, which is important when the barrier feels compromised.

Biohyalux Barrier Balancing Toner / Lotion is a lighter option if you dislike rich creams in summer. The product information highlights hyaluronic acid, ectoin and lactobacillus extract. Hyaluronic acid supports hydration, ectoin is useful in stress-related skin care, and lactobacillus extract fits a microbiome-balancing skincare approach.

Trauer / Chuangfukang Medical Sodium Hyaluronate Repair Solution is suitable for a simple hydration-and-repair step when the skin is fragile. For a more serum-like option, Trauer Collagen Hyaluronic Acid Ampoule Serum contains a repair-led ingredient profile often associated with panthenol, ectoin, collagen, glycosphingolipids, multiple forms of hyaluronic acid and ergothioneine. This kind of formula makes more sense after sun than strong exfoliation or aggressive brightening.

Step 4: What about post-sun pigmentation?

After sunburn, some people notice the skin turning darker, patchier or more uneven. It is tempting to reach immediately for niacinamide, acids or brightening serums, but timing matters. If your skin still feels hot, sore, itchy or flaky, wait.

Once the skin is calm, niacinamide can be helpful for uneven tone and barrier support, while ingredients such as arbutin, tranexamic acid, vitamin C derivatives or azelaic-acid-related formulas may be useful for pigmentation routines. But brightening only works well when inflammation is controlled and daily sunscreen is consistent.

For oilier or blemish-prone skin that becomes red and unsettled after heat, Kefumei Olive Soothing Mask is a useful calming option. Ingredient information for this mask highlights olive leaf extract, centella asiatica extract, sodium hyaluronate, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, glycerin, allantoin, PCA zinc and azelaic-acid-related care. In simple terms, it is aimed at hydration, soothing and heat-related skin instability, especially for combination or blemish-prone skin.

SPF is part of the repair plan

After sunburn, the skin is more vulnerable to further UV damage. In the UK, NHS guidance recommends sunscreen with at least SPF30 and good UVA protection, alongside shade, clothing and sensible reapplication. For summer, many customers prefer SPF50 for the face, especially if they are outdoors for more than a short commute.

Simple routines for different sunburn situations

If your skin is mildly red and warm: cool compress → SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel → La Roche-Posay B5 Mask or a Kefumei hydrating mask → light moisturiser.

If your skin feels dry, tight or flaky: gentle cleanse → Trauer Sodium Hyaluronate Repair Solution or Collagen Hyaluronic Acid Ampoule → SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 or Biohyalux Barrier Lotion → SPF50 in the morning.

If you are oily or blemish-prone: avoid heavy occlusive layering → SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel or Kefumei Olive Soothing Mask → light moisturiser → strict sunscreen and shade.

If you have blisters, broken skin or severe pain: do not self-treat with random antibiotic creams or acne gels. Ask a pharmacist, GP or NHS 111 for advice.

The key message: after sunburn, do not do too much. Calm first, hydrate second, repair the barrier third, and brighten only when the skin has fully settled. A quiet routine usually works better than an aggressive one.
